i snapped this mirrored self-portrait while shooting my very first wedding. already a professional commercial photographer at the time, i really had no idea just how much wedding photography would change my life and turn into such a fulfilling new career path. i quickly realized just how much shooting a wedding meant to me when i started to see the looks on brides’ and grooms’ faces when i would give them their photos. in commercial photography i would get a check and a handshake. in wedding photography i started getting huge smiles, weepy eyes, and even hugs. after the wedding was all said and done, people would send me holiday cards and invitations to attend their various affairs. this was and is a very good feeling to create connection like that within relationships that begin on a business level. it’s kind of like that thing high school counselors do when they ask you what you would do if you had a million dollars and the answer is invariably supposed to be what your career should be. so, yeah, if i had a million dollars (i think maybe that number has inflated since this guy went to high school), i would definitely shoot photos at huge celebrations of peoples’ love for one another and make endless new friends in the process.
